We've just comemorated Gene Vincent's Memory on October 12. We are waiting for seeing pictures of Gene Vincent's Grave after this tribute... Fan Club members participated on putting flowers on his grave that day, Tina Craddock, Gene's sister was there too. Here are a few words that tell about Gene Vincent's last daysTHE LAST DAYS: Early September of 1971 Ronny Weiser of Rolling Rock Records, was curiously asking a local record store owner if she knew anything about Gene Vincent. She ironically replied that she heard he was in an apartment down the street. Ron made immediate contact and Gene recorded four vocal-only songs right in Ron's apartment, using a $140 portable reel-to-reel tape deck. Music tracks were added later. It was then back to England one last time in mid-September of 1971 soon after the Weiser apartment tapings. Gene rehearsed about 12 songs for a tour, and recorded five of them with Richard Cole and the Kansas Hook band on Friday, October 1, 1971. This material (all but "Whole Lotta Shakin'" was released years later as "The Last Session." Gene managed to get through two shows at the Wookey Hollow Club in Liverpool October 3rd and 4th, 1971 before his health completely gave out and he flew back to California. WORRIED ABOUT THEIR SON, Gene's parents, then residing in Saugus, CA, traveled to Simi Valley to find him brokenhearted and disoriented. They decided to take Gene to their home and upon entering the house, Gene tripped and fell, bursting his chronic ulcers and began vomiting blood and tomato juice. He was taken by an ambulance to Inter-Valley Hospital, where he passed away about an hour later. Among Gene's last words while waiting for the ambulance was the promise, "If I get through this, I'm going to be a better man." However, he did not survive. Gene died in Newhall, California, from a bleeding ulcer on October 12, 1971 at the age of 36. His mother said, "After he died, he had the sweetest smile on his face. Actual burial site is Eternal Memorial Park, Newhall CA

Hi Guys and Gals, I went to Gene's grave today and delivered some flowers from Gene's French Fan Club. IT'S A SAD BUT PEACEFUL PLACE. WHEN THE BREEZE BLEW I KNEW HE WAS NEAR (AS HE ALWAYS IS WITH ME) I SANG A SONG TO HIM THAT HE USED TO SING TO ME. I LEFT A PICK AND A CIG. AND THEN I WENT TO HIS SON'S GRAVE AND DID THE SAME. NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT HE IS NOT THOUGHT ABOUT, IF NOT BY ME BY ONE OF HIS MANY FANS, AND I THANK EACH AND EVERYONE OF U FOR THAT. LAST NITE CHRIS AND I WENT TO SEE A BAND CALLED THE GO KATZ. THEY DID A TRIBUTE SHOW FOR MY BROTHER. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT THE DAY THE WORLD TURNED BLUE FOR ME WHEN MY BROTHER PASSED. TINA CRADDOCK | |
