Wanda Jean Jackson est née le 20 octobre 1937 à Maud (Oklahoma). Elle signe son premier contrat discographique chez Decca. le 24 mars 1954 Wanda Jackson enregistre cinq titres avec les musiciens de Hank Thompson (la star de la Country à 'époque). En 1955 elle effectue une tournée organisée par Bob Neal avec Elvis Presley. Elvis l'incitera à chanter du rock'n'roll.





Lors des tournées qu'elle fait encore avec Elvis au Texas et en Oklahoma, Wanda incorpore progressivement des titres de rock'n'roll dans son répertoire.Avec Fujiyama Mama (1958), une chanson d'Annisteen Allen, elle connaît son premier vrai grand succès. Peu de chanteuses de Rock'n'Roll se sont imposées dans un monde d'hommes. Seules Brenda Lee et Janis Martin pourraient lui être comparées.
