Les largeurs à la mode n'étaient pas les mêmes en 56, 57 ou 58.... !

si je me rapelle bien , le type qui met cette photo en vente sur e bay est le fils du DJ lui meme et a toute une collection de photos de son pere avec des artistes de l'epoque .
cette photo revient periodiquement sur e_bay .
Je crois que c'est fin 55 quand gene etait la vedette locale en virginie ou alors debut 56 au plus tard .

Alors, finalement, a-t-on le lieu et la date de cette photo ?

Je doute un peu que ce soit le Perry Como Show, car il était diffusé sur NBC, ce qui n'est pas ce que l'on devine sur la camera, et les deux autres personnes ne sont pas Perry Como.

Quelqu'un en sait-il plus ?

Il me semble que c'est le même sur cette photo, avec Johnny Cash et Gene...

J'ai eu une première réponse du vendeur.

Il dit que la troisième personne sur la photo est le collègue de son père John Dixon et qu'il ne connaît pas la date exacte mais qu'il va cherher.

Je lui demande de nouveau si lors de cette émission, il n'a s'agit que d'un interview ou si Gene a chanté et si des archives existes.

Je viens de recevoir une réponse très complète à nos questions à propos de ces deux photos évoquées plus haut.

Celle avec Johnny Cash, Chuck Thompson et Gene.

Et celle avec Gene, entouré de Chuck Thompson et de son collègue, John Dixon.

That picture of Gene with Johnny Cash and Chuck Thompson was taken in Nashville at the fifth annual Disc Jockey Festival and celebration of the Grand Ole Opry 31th birthday. That convention was held on November 9 and 10, 1956 and you can see Johnny Cash guitar tag on his jacket with the mention WSM Grand Ole Opry. It was a big lobbying operation set by the records label and the event was covered by the Country press of the time. You can see many pictures of Gene at that event with Eddie Hill, Hubert Long, Jimmie Rodgers Snow or Faron Young on “Country Song Roundup” – June 1957 issue. On his excellent booklet printed late 70’s and titled Gene Vincent Story 1956, Gerard Lautrey wrongly dated those pics as taken on June 23, 1956. There’s also some beautiful picture of Gene with Wanda Jackson reading a “Country and Western Jamboree” magazine or holding “Country Magazine Reporter”, a Nashville publication run by Charlie Lamb.
Then Chuck Thompson, DJ on WALA, was backstage with Gene and Johnny Cash. That’s ole Johnny that yelled to Elvis, sitting on the floor, to get up his ass and to take that picture of them. Elvis was at the previous DJ convention in November 1955 and should have been there. So the story could be true even if old Chuck Thompson often mixed dates. The second of his Gene’s picture was taken in Mobile in the WALA-TV studio. Gene was there for them TV Record Hop Show and was interviewed. During the show, Gene was seen on camera dancing with the pretty girls who were regular on that show. Chuck remembers Gene as the most popular performer with the young studio audience. He was easy for them to talk to him and the girls thought him ‘cute’. I n 1958, Chuck and his pal John Dixon welcomed Jerry Lee Lewis and a beautiful picture was taken. Jerry Lee played three songs and gave them an interview that was published in TV Radio Mirror in August 1958. That paper was titled “We Like Rock’n’Roll” and here Jerry Lee talk exclusively about … Jerry Lee. Nevertheless, Chuck remembers Jerry Lee as polite and agreeable, almost shy.
Chuck Thompson was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1923 and moved to California in 1941 taking a job at Lockheed Aircraft. After the war he enrolled the University of Alabama, one of the first campuses to have a radio station called WABP. He soon got his first job on radio here before moving to WJJJ in Montgomery (Alabama). Then he was known like a blues and jazz specialist. In 1949 he was on WELO located in Tupelo (Mississippi) and, after a couple of year, went to work for a Hattiesburg station and wrote the song “Miss America” in 1953. It was also in Hattiesburg where Chuck took on the rooster Elmer as partner. But in those mid-50’s days Television was becoming a magnetic force which attracted radio DJ’s. In 1954, he was working for WALA-TV in Mobile (Alabama) where he befriended Curtis Gordon. During his career that ended in 1961 he worked with Hank Williams, Harry James, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey or Kay Starr to name a few another than our beloved rockers.
His last letter to me came in January 2006 and my last letter send to him on May 2007 was send back with the fearing mention “Return to Sender – Undeliverable as addressed”. I don’t have any news since but I hope that 85 year old friend is still doing OK. The last, but not the least, is to know all Chuck’s pictures were copyrighted. That’s the reason why I never used them on my various papers since we came in touch. Here you know a little bit more about the story behind those great pictures.

Les souvenirs d'un vieux rocker m'a touché, car je faisais le même métier, dans le même coin (rue Dussoub, juste en face France Soir), à peu près au même moment (de 63 à 68).

Le mail de Camille Daddy n'a pas fait un long chemin, car j'habite le neuf-quatre aussi. La banlieue Sud a toujours été R'n'R. Il est vrai que le neuf-quatre est grand et n'est pas qu'au Sud.

Pour revenir à la photo que tu as mis, est-elle vraiment couleur ou colorisée ? Car celle d'ebay est en NB.

Pour la photo, colorisée ou non, je ne sais pas... Je l'avais bien avant qu'elle n'apparaisse sur eBay...
